Thursday, April 30, 2020 Digital Safety

Today, more than ever, it is important to understand how to be safe when using social media and all the internet has to offer.  The following links offer information and things to think about when it comes to digital safety.  First start with the Kahoot game to get you thinking about digital safety.  Then watch the youtube videos on internet safety.  Next access the Google slides and read and discuss the scenarios with someone in your household.  If you have a moment use the comment section for this post to give a statement on why internet safety is so important.

Wednesday, April 29, 2020 Word Problem Wednesday!

So because I like alliteration, I thought it would be a good idea to sneak a word problem in this week!  Here are a few to try!  Put your answer and explain how you got it in the comment box.  I will let you know if you are correct or if you need to go back to the drawing board!

Some strategies that I like to use are to underline key words or information and then create a visual to help me organize my information.

  1. Franklin had $16.40 to spend at the toy store. He bought 5 toy cars that cost $1.80 each and a race track that cost $5.45. How much money does Franklin have left to buy more toys?
  2. Daniel has 1615 Skittles stored in boxes. If the are 85 boxes, how many Skittles must go in each box?
  3. The school is planning a field trip. There are 4941 students and 61 seats on each school bus. How many buses are needed to take the trip?

Well…I missed yesterday!  In this time of social distance, “slow the spread”, quarantine, pandemic, “shelter in place”, there are just times when you are out of sorts and feeling motivated is a little hard.

But today I am going to post a couple of activities.  One will be the link to freerice.com.  This website is a unique way to quiz and build on your vocabulary knowledge.  As you go through each level you can watch the virtual rice bowl fill up to help feed the hungry in other countries.  The other is an animated short film.  As you watch think about the challenges faced by each character.  How do they overcome those challenges?  What is a possible theme (life lesson)?

Wednesday, April 22, 2022 Earth Day!

The first Earth Day was celebrated in 1970.  This day is about raising awareness of the importance of protecting our planet and the small things we can do to make a difference in our environment.  Below you will find a video on how Earth Day started and the impact it has had:

After watching the video, think about what you can do to make a difference!  Maybe it is make a poster about recycling to post in your neighborhood, put signs up around your house reminding everyone to turn off the lights when they leave the room.  If nothing else, take a moment and just go outside, observe all the beautiful sights and sounds of nature – appreciate the earth this Earth Day!

Monday, April 20, 2020 Motivation Monday!

Who do you want to be?  The motivational video below poses this question and many more!  A great way to start your week whether you are 12 or 58!  Take a minute today to watch the video, reflect on the message and set a few goals for yourself.

Some reflection questions to consider:

  • How do you define success?
  • What role do you play in your own success?
  • What needs to change to see change?
  • Who do you want to be?
  • What are you willing to do to meet your goals and your definition of success?

Let’s be creative!  Check out the opening lines from a few young adult novels below.  Choose one to  to start your own story!

  • “It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen.”
  • “I had just come to accept that my life would be ordinary when extraordinary things began to happen.”
  • “One summer night I fell asleep, hoping the world would be different when I woke”
  • “The way I figure it, everyone gets a miracle.”
